A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
